As English has become a global language, there is a growing demand for people who can speak, read, write, and listen in English proficiently. Two standardized tests that are commonly used to evaluate the English language proficiency of non-native speakers are IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and PTE (Pearson Test of English). In this article, we will discuss the differences between these two tests and help you decide which one is better for you.
IELTS has two versions – Academic and General Training. Both versions include four sections – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Speaking section is conducted face-to-face with an examiner. In contrast, PTE has only one version and includes three sections – Speaking and Writing, Reading, and Listening. The Speaking section in PTE is recorded on a computer, and the Writing section is also done on a computer.
IELTS is a paper-based test, while PTE is a computer-based test. The advantage of taking a computer-based test is that the results are delivered faster than paper-based tests. Moreover, with PTE, there is no human intervention in the evaluation of the Speaking section, which eliminates the possibility of examiner bias. In contrast, the Speaking section in IELTS is evaluated by an examiner, which means that the result might be influenced by the examiner’s interpretation.
IELTS scoring is based on a band system ranging from 0 to 9, with 0.5 increments. PTE scoring is based on a scale of 10-90. Both tests evaluate the test-taker’s ability to speak, read, write, and listen to English, but the scoring systems differ slightly. The advantage of the band system is that it is easier to understand, and there is more detailed feedback available to the test-taker.
The total duration of the IELTS test is 2 hours and 45 minutes for the Academic version and 2 hours and 40 minutes for the General Training version. The total duration of the PTE test is 3 hours. While the difference in test duration may not seem significant, it can make a difference for some test-takers who prefer shorter tests.
IELTS is available in more than 140 countries, while PTE is available in more than 50 countries. The advantage of IELTS is that it is available in more countries, which means that it is easier to find a test center close to you. However, PTE is gaining popularity, and more test centers are being added every year.
Both IELTS and PTE are excellent options for evaluating English language proficiency, and the choice between the two depends on the individual’s preferences and needs. IELTS is a more established test with a longer history, while PTE is a newer test that uses the latest technology. PTE is better suited for test-takers who are comfortable with using computers and prefer a faster result delivery. IELTS is better suited for test-takers who prefer a paper-based test and want more detailed feedback. It is recommended to research both tests and consult with the organization or institution that requires the test to determine which one is suitable for their purpose.
